Paypal Manager – Job Offer Scam

PayPalHere goes another scam, in the form of Paypal Manager Job Offer. Most of the affected people are from Europe and specially from Eastern Europe such as Russia, Ukraine, Poland and other countries.

The modus operandi is simple, scrap job seekers e-mail ids from the job sites such as Monster etc and spam the unsuspecting job seekers. It is very easy to create a job hunter account on Monster and scrap job seekers data easily.

I receive this e-mail from someone who wanted to ask for my opinion on this. Apparently it seems that receiver has created account on UK job site Reed.co.uk which is a bogus job sites which populates fake and non-existent jobs and collect job seekers details and then sell to fraudsters.

I asked the receiver of this e-mail to recall all the job sites he has registered on and the only job site he could remembered was Reed.co.uk fake job site. He even never heard of  Monster as mentioned in the e-mail.

I was also asked by another friend who revealed that he has recently registered on Monster.co.uk and received such e-mail.

If you receive such e-mail click on SPAM button in your e-mail client and delete e-mail completely.

Here is the e-mail

  1. Hey, I’m from Scotland and I just stumbled upon this page, started reading it and I noticed a majour error: Reed.co.uk is NOT a fake site. Infact I am currently employeed under contract with reed as a temp worker in Rosyth and I have been getting paid for several months now. There is definetly nothing fake about the site. Maybe I read your article wrong (I sorta just stopped to send you this e-mail) but I feel it may be worth it to tell you anyway.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Shaun.

    1. Shaun,
I’ve been watching Reed.co.uk since it started as a recruitment consultancy. I’m not saying it is a fake job site, what I’m saying is that jobs posted on this site are fake or non-existent. It is very common practice for the job sites to post fake jobs to boost up their stats and then try to monetize. I work in online marketing and know all the inside stuff which goes on there.

I’ve also used reed.co.uk in the past when I used to be a jobseeker. I’ve worked in a variety of domain and have tested all job sites in the UK. I know each and every job site and what they are up to. Just by looking at the posted jobs I can tell if they are fake or real.

Even I don’t hesitate to say that 100% of jobs posted on reed.co.uk are fake, non-existent, or copied which means that if you apply for any job there you will never get any reply.

However I’m not saying that reed.co.uk is a complete fake establishment. I’ve nothing against reed.co.uk.

For this particular scam job for Paypal Manager role, I’ve verified with my friend and aksed him to check out all his e-mails and recall all the sites where he has applied. The only job site he had applied was on reed.co.uk and my guess is that his e-mail was leaked out from reed.co.uk (read sold) to such scammer.

My friend is very caution with his e-mails and never leaves any trace of his e-mail to anyone, it is also non-traceable on the Internet. So there is no way his e-mail could have been obtained by any other means that from reed.co.uk.

I’m not a MI5 agent and I’ve no concrete proof to substantiate my claim. Everything reported here is based on my own observation.

  2. Hello Ajay,

I have just received the Paypal Manager scam email as copied below. I came across your page when I searched to see if the Humnpay LTD company existed. I have taken your advice and reported the Email as spam and deleted it.

    Thanks for the alert.

Just for info, the version of the Email that I received was from: msc@cslawfirm.com and marked as sent to: anneshearing@hotmail.com (I never really understand how they get routed to your own address!)

  7. Hello

My name is Mark Rhodes and I’m Head of Marketing & eCommerce at reed.co.uk.

Firstly, I’d like to stress that any scam (proven or otherwise) that we learn of which relates to jobs posted on any recruitment website is of significant concern to us. As such, at reed.co.uk we have a dedicated support function responsible for verifying the content of all vacancies posted on the site. We go to great lengths to ensure the quality and authenticity of jobs advertised on reed.co.uk and have a number of measures in place to ensure jobseekers using the service benefit from a safe and secure experience.

Secondly, ony the jobseeking details of candidates who have given appropriate permission are made available to genuine recruiters, who have been verified for their suitability. reed.co.uk never sells email list data about reed.co.uk’s users to third parties. When registering with reed.co.uk, users can choose to make their details available only to recruiters whose jobs they have applied for.

We have previously been made aware of so-called ‘phishing’ scams where the names of popular job sites (including reed.co.uk) have been used as a way to elicit contact and information from jobseekers. As such, reed.co.uk’s online Security Centre carries advice and information about this and other online security issues: http://www.reed.co.uk/confidence.aspx

As the UK’s number one job site, we go to great lengths to respect and protect the privacy and security of our users. If you have any concerns relating to vacancies on reed.co.uk, you can contact the reed.co.uk team via the form on the following page: http://www.reed.co.uk/ContactUs.aspx

    Thanks very much for reading.

    Best wishes
    Mark Rhodes
Head of Marketing & eCommerce, reed.co.uk

    1. “Hello

My name is Mark Rhodes and I’m Head of Marketing & eCommerce at reed.co.uk.”
Welcome and Tx for reply and clarification.

“As such, at reed.co.uk we have a dedicated support function responsible for verifying the content of all vacancies posted on the site. We go to great lengths to ensure the quality and authenticity of jobs advertised on reed.co.uk and have a number of measures in place to ensure jobseekers using the service benefit from a safe and secure experience.”

That is absolutely rubbish. Few years ago when I last used reed.co.uk I’ve done extensive research on the vacancies posted on reed.co.uk and found that all vacancies are bogus or mere a copy or scrapped from other site just to boost numbers. This is a very common practice followed by any new (and sometime well established) job sites. Search for any job from any site and chances are that you will see the same job posted/scrapped on at least 10 other UK job sites.

On top of that when I used to apply for jobs I didn’t even get a single acknowledgment for any application let alone any response from the job posters.

Finally I’ve to give up wasting time on reed.co.uk and marked it as blacklisted job site and since then I’ve never used it again.

“As the UK’s number one job site”
This is laughable. Every job site in the UK claim to be No.1. JobSite, TopJobs, TotalJobs all of them are No. 1 so how many No. 1s are out there ;)

“We have previously been made aware of so-called ‘phishing’ scams where the names of popular job sites (including reed.co.uk) have been used as a way to elicit contact and information from jobseekers. As such, reed.co.uk’s online Security Centre carries advice and information about this and other online security issues:”

It didn’t stop. As you can see on above comments that the candidates who just registered on reed.co.uk started to get phishing e-mails. My friend also received the phishing e-mail as soon as he applied to the job, which proves that you have done nothing to stop this practice and continue to leak out data to 3rd parties who in turn either mis-utilize it or resell to others.

“Secondly, ony the jobseeking details of candidates who have given appropriate permission are made available to genuine recruiters, who have been verified for their suitability. reed.co.uk never sells email list data about reed.co.uk’s users to third parties. When registering with reed.co.uk, users can choose to make their details available only to recruiters whose jobs they have applied for.”

Really?? So my friend and the others who replied to this post have “opted to receive phishing e-mails” during registration?

If you are really into some genuine business then you better do some home work in cleaning up the mess you have already created.

Leaking out users data by any means violates UK’s data protection act and you might get in some serious trouble if someone really decided to take action.

If you think you are clean then you better do further security checks on the 3rd parties who you supply the data. If not you then someone else must have been misusing the data for which blame will always go to reed.co.uk as the job seekers register on reed.co.uk.

  8. I just got a similar one, and it must have come through Monster, since I’m not on reed.co.uk. Here’s the email I got:

      Hello Melissa,

Thank you for your interest to work at our company. The main task of
our PayPal manager is getting money from the buyer through PayPal
account and sending it via Western Union. This position is home
based. You can work from any US state. PayPal manager needn’t
personally meet with the buyer or arrange any deals.

Before we discuss the vacancy, let me tell you about us and about
our activities. Our company is one of the leaders in sporting goods
production and tourism in Poland. At the moment, we produce over 500
kinds of different goods, and our product range is growing.
Well-formed contacts allow us to successfully sell our products in
many countries across Europe and also in the USA. Lately, we have
received many orders from the USA, and for this reason, we need new
PayPal manager who are based there.

      Here’s how it works:
      – The PayPal manager gets the payment for the goods from the
      clients.
      – Manager informs the supervisor the details (sum, time of money
      transfer, etc)
      – The supervisor sends detailed instructions about money transfer
via Western Union to our original manager to the office in Poland.

The PayPal manager gets 7 percent for each transaction. Average
salary is for this job is $30,000 – $35,000 per year. There is no
costs from your pocket. We pay all fees, etc.

I’m sure you ask yourself “Why does the company pay additional
percent when the clients can pay for the order himself?” According
to the special research 73 percent of buyers prefer online orders.
That’s why they will order the goods in other store than spend some
hours of their spare time going to Western Union office. As a result
of the financial statistics for the latest quarter it’s clear that
the net of our PayPal managers enlarge the number of sales by 44
percent. So our main task is to expand the staff of our PayPal
      managers.

Do you have any questions about this vacancy? If everything is
clear, email me and I’ll send you future info about this position:
work place, work time and initial process.

I want this company to get charges and justice for all the people who probably didn’t research it and got taken for who knows how much. Does anybody have any advice or wanna take further action with me, I have all emails saved from the first one. Lets nail this (MPD POLAND) Karen Reed SCAM!!!!!!!

    1. Buddy this is not the Paypal which sends such e-mails, this paypal manager job is sent by scammers and by the paypal.

  15. @Maria: The scam is that they want you to receive transfers (most likely stolen funds, or scam money) and pay it to them via Western Union. When their scam is discovered, the buyers charge back and leave you with a negative Paypal balance while they got the money from you.
